American Legion Auxiliary, Natoma Unit 109, was featured within the Nationwide group’s Centennial journal for studying a youngsters’s ebook, “The Poppy Girl.“
Mary Murphy learn the story to teams of youngsters previous to Memorial Day 2019 in celebrating a Centennial 12 months for the Poppy, American Legion, and American Legion Auxiliary.
The Poppy is the remembrance flower since 1919. Every purple crepe paper poppy is hand made by a Kansas Disabled Veteran, with 100% of donations going to assist disabled and deserving Kansas Veterans.
In 1915, following the Second Battle of Ypres, Lt. Col. John McCrae, a doctor with the Canadian Expeditionary Pressure, wrote the poem, “In Flanders Fields.”
Its opening strains discuss with the fields of poppies that grew among the many troopers’ graves in Flanders. In 1918, impressed by the poem, YWCA employee Moina Michael attended a YWCA Abroad Struggle Secretaries’ convention sporting a silk poppy pinned to her coat and distributed over two dozen extra to others current.
In 1920, the Nationwide American Legion, based in 1919, adopted it because the group’s official image.
