WSU Tech Thursday evening issued an announcement asserting that Advisor to the President Ivanka Trump will not be a featured speaker on the school’s June 6 digital commencement.
WSU Tech President Sheree Utash says the invitation to Trump was prolonged in February and “Mrs. Trump provided to document a congratulatory message to graduates to be performed throughout our occasion.”
“In mild of the social justice points introduced forth by George Floyd’s demise, I perceive and take duty that the timing of the announcement was insensitive,” Utash says. “For this, I am sorry. That was by no means the intent, and I would like you to know I’ve heard you and we’re responding.”
The faculty says WSU Tech sensible nursing graduate Rebecca Zinabu would be the lone speaker for the June 6 graduation.
“Our graduates will even be invited to individually view congratulatory messages from over 30 voices, together with Ms. Trump and group members,” Utash says.
Utash says she understands “the sharply divided response” to the announcement of Trump being the featured graduation speaker.
“The faculty stands with those that combat injustice and advocate for social equality, and we’re profoundly pleased with the range and social change being introduced forth by our college students, alumni, college, and employees,” Utash says.
Ivanka Trump would be the featured graduation speaker at WSU Tech’s digital commencement ceremony on June 6.
WSU Tech President Sheree Utash serves on the American Workforce Coverage Advisory board, which Trump additionally serves on. The board focuses on the American workforce and creating job alternatives.
